| biography:
| Clergyman, born in London, UK. He studied at Oxford, served in World War 2, and was ordained in 1948. He became Bishop of Willesden (1964), Truro (1973), and London (1981–91), and was chair of the Church of England Board for Social Responsibility (1976–83). He opposed the 1970s Anglican–Methodist unity scheme, and as Bishop of London became the focus of opposition to the ordination of women to the priesthood. He was knighted in 1991. |
