| biography:
| Civil engineer, born in London, UK. He studied at the City and Guilds of London Institute, assisted Ralph Freeman on the design of the Sydney Harbour bridge, then joined Sir William Arrol & Co in Glasgow, where he became director and chief engineer, extending the uses of welding and high-tensile steels in bridges and other structures. In 1949 he joined Freeman, Fox & Partners, and was put in charge of the design of the Forth, Severn, Auckland Harbour, Bosphorus (Turkey), and Humber bridges, as well as radio telescopes, goliath cranes, and many other steel structures. |
