| British statesman, born in Leicestershire, C England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, entered parliament in 1865 as a Liberal, and became a Lord of the Admiralty (1868–70), parliamentary secretary (1880–2), chief secretary for Ireland (1882–4), and secretary for Scotland (1886, 1892–5). He wrote a number of historical works, among them the famous biography of his uncle, Macaulay (1876), and the American Revolution (1909). |
