| Australian statesman and prime minister (1904–5), born in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, W Scotland, UK. He arrived in Australia with his parents in 1852, studied law, and in 1878 became secretary to the attorney general of New South Wales. In 1880 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of NSW, becoming premier of the state (1894–9). He was Leader of the Opposition in the House of Representatives (1901), and served briefly as prime minister (1904–5). He was Australia's first high commissioner to London, and then took up the seat for Hanover Square in the British House of Commons, which he held until his death. |
