| Musicologist, born in London, UK. He practised as a civil engineer, then became secretary to the Society of Arts (1849), and secretary and director of the Crystal Palace Company (1852). His major work was as editor of the Dictionary of Music and Musicians (1878–89), and he also edited Macmillan's Magazine (1868–83) and contributed to biblical study. He was knighted in 1883 on the opening of the Royal College of Music, of which he was director until 1895. |
