| biography:
| British explorer and administrator, born in Lisbon, Portugal. He made two expeditions to NW Western Australia (1837, 1839), and was appointed Governor of South Australia in 1840. Transferred to New Zealand in 1845, he succeeded in establishing peace between the warring Maoris and British settlers, becoming a pioneer scholar of Maori culture in the process. Knighted in 1848, he was appointed Governor of Cape Colony in 1854, and again helped to restore peace between the natives and settlers. He returned to New Zealand for a second term as governor in 1861, but had less success this time in carrying out his legislative programme. He was a member of the New Zealand House of Representatives (1874–94), and premier (1877–9), before retiring to England. |
