| Arctic explorer, born in Stockport, Greater Manchester, NW England, UK. He sailed with Sir John Franklin on Polar expeditions (1818–22, 1825–7), and in 1833–5 went in search of explorer Sir John Ross, discovering Artillery Lake and the Great Fish River (now Back's River), which he traced to the Frozen Ocean. In 1836–7 he further explored the Arctic shores. He was knighted in 1839, and made admiral in 1857. |
