| Aircraft designer, born in Haslemere, Surrey, SE England, UK. He built his first plane in 1908 and became director of the firm bearing his name, producing many famous aircraft during and between the two world wars, including the Tiger Moth, the Mosquito, and the Vampire jet. He established a height record for light aircraft in 1928, won the King's Cup air race at the age of 51, and was knighted in 1944. |
