biography: Inorganic chemist, born in Todmorden, West Yorkshire, N England, UK. He studied at Imperial College, London, where he returned in 1956 after war work in Canada and the USA. While at Harvard in 1952, he showed that ferrocene has a molecule with an iron atom sandwiched between two carbon rings; since then, thousands of such metallocenes have been made and studied. He shared the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1973, and was knighted in 1976.
