| biography:
| Ballet dancer, choreographer, and mime, born in Moscow, Russia. He trained with the Imperial Ballet School at St Petersburg, then became principal dancer, replacing Nijinsky in Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, and going on to choreograph such acclaimed works as La Boutique fantasque (1919), Parade (1917), and The Rite of Spring (1920). He settled in Europe, working independently for various companies, including Sadler's Wells and Ballets des Champs Elysées. He created his own parts in the ballet films The Red Shoes, choreographed by Robert Helpmann (1948), and The Tales of Hoffmann (1950). He became an American citizen in 1944. |
