| Surgeon, born in Dorchester, Dorset, S England, UK. He studied in London, and became professor at the Royal College of Surgeons, and a founder of the British Red Cross Society. He made improvements in operations for appendicitis. He found Joseph Merrick (1862–90), the ‘Elephant Man’, at a freak show, and brought him to the London Hospital in 1886. |
