| Pioneer aircraft designer and engineer, born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, SWC England, UK. In 1909 he founded the firm of aeronautical engineers which bears his name. His twin-engined 0/400 (1918) was one of the earliest heavy bombers, and his Hampden and Halifax bombers were used in World War 2. His civil aircraft include the Hannibal, Hermes, and Herald transports. He was knighted in 1942. |
