| biography:
| British naval commander. He entered the navy in 1871, rose to rear-admiral by 1908, and commanded HMS Invincible in the action which wiped out the German squadron under von Spee off the Falkland Is in 1914. Thereafter he served with the Grand Fleet, including the Battle of Jutland (1916). In 1921 he was promoted Admiral of the Fleet (1921). |
