Astronomer-royal for Scotland (1905–10) and England (1910–33), he is known for his observations in 1919 which supported Einstein's hypothesis that light could be deflected by a gravitational field, and for his work on the distribution of stars and on solar eclipses. He was knighted in 1915. |
