| Actor-manager, born in Alresford, Hampshire, S England, UK. He first appeared in Henry Irving's production of Romeo and Juliet in 1882 at the Lyceum, and was knighted by King George V on the stage of Drury Lane during a Shakespeare tercentenary matinee (1916). The company he formed was the forerunner of the Royal Shakespeare Company. |
