| Physician and virologist, born in Traralgon, Victoria, SE Australia. Director of the Institute for Medical Research, Melbourne, he became a world authority on viral diseases, perfecting the technique of cultivating viruses in living chick embryos. He shared the 1960 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for researches on immunological intolerance in relation to skin and organ grafting. He was knighted in 1951. |
