| biography:
| Colonial administrator in Malaya, born in Belper, Derbyshire, C England, UK. He was British resident in Selangor (1882) and Perak (1889–95), then resident-general in the Federated Malay States (1896–1901). Knighted in 1897, he was governor and commander-in-chief of the Straits Settlement (1901–4), and became an authority on Malay language and history, writing a number of books on the subject. Port Swettenham, Selangor, is named after him. |
