| biography:
| British soldier and explorer, born in Murree, N Pakistan (formerly India). He explored Manchuria in 1886, and on the way back discovered the route from Kashgar into India via the Mustagh Pass. In 1902 he went on the expedition which opened up Tibet to the Western world. British resident in Kashmir (1906–9), he wrote much on India and C Asia. He founded the World Congress of Faiths in 1936. |
