| English proprietor of Maine, born in Wraxall, Somerset, SW England, UK. He founded two Plymouth companies (1606–19 and 1620–35) for planting lands in New England. In 1639 he received a charter constituting him proprietor of Maine, although he never went to America. His grandson sold his rights to Massachusetts in 1677. |
