| Composer and conductor, born in London, UK, the son of Eugène Goossens (1867–1958). He studied in Bruges and London, became associate conductor to Sir Thomas Beecham, then worked in the USA (1923–45) as a conductor of orchestras in Rochester (New York) and Cincinnati (Ohio). As conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and director of the New South Wales Conservatory (1947–56), he became a major influence on Australian music. His compositions include two operas, a ballet, an oratorio, and two symphonies. He was knighted in 1955. |
