| British mathematician. He studied at Cambridge, and became professor of mathematics at Warwick University (1964–88). Early work developing topology and catastrophe theory produced many applications to physics, social sciences, and economics. He became principal of Hertford College, Oxford (1988–95), and was knighted in 1991. |
