| biography:
| Pioneer motor manufacturer, born in Adelaide, South Australia. He joined his father in the manufacture of car body parts, and eventually Holdens became the major Australian producer of bodies for imported chassis, especially from General Motors in the USA. He had studied automation methods in the USA, and rapidly expanded the productivity of the company; by 1929 Holdens was the biggest body builder in the British empire. Through a downturn in demand during the Depression, General Motors acquired Holdens, and he became chairman of the company in 1931. |
