| English soldier and diplomat, probably born in London, UK. He took part in a rebellion against Richard III, escaped to the European mainland, later returning to England with the Earl of Richmond (Henry VII). He became Governor of Calais in 1493, and in 1494 went to Ireland as deputy-governor for Prince Henry (Henry VIII). He is best remembered for Poyning's laws, subjecting the Irish Parliament to the control of the English king and privy council. |
