| biography:
| Cartoonist and musician, born in Ontario, SE Canada. He moved to England in 1931 and studied art at Camberwell, then did camouflage work during World War 2. He joined the Daily Mail as staff cartoonist in 1945, creating Rufus (later Flook), a daily strip for children (1949). Beginning as whimsy, this strip developed into satirical comment under many scriptwriters, including Sir Compton Mackenzie and eventually Trog himself. Trog (the pen-name comes from the Troglodytes, his jazzband, for which he plays clarinet) expanded into political cartooning in the Spectator (1959), the Daily Mail (1968), and colour covers for Punch (1971). |
