| biography:
| Painter, born in Paris, France. He studied at Westminster and Ipswich, then in Rome and Paris. He was professor at University College London (1871), art director at South Kensington (1876–81), director of the National Gallery (1894–1905), and president of the Royal Academy (1896). Among his works are ‘The Ides of March’ (1883), ‘The Visit of the Queen of Sheba to Solomon’ (1891), and the portrait of Lillie Langtry bequeathed in her will to the Jersey Museum. In 1869–70 he designed the cartoons for a mosaic of St George in the Houses of Parliament. |
