| Pioneer of refrigeration, born in Coonamble, New South Wales, SE Australia. He worked in a furniture factory from the age of 13, later opening his own works to make ice-chests, then wooden cabinets for refrigerators, and he eventually designed and manufactured the first popular domestic Australian refrigerator. He made generous donations to medical research, children's hospitals, and the Taronga zoo in Sydney, becoming an honorary life director of the zoo. |
