| Botanist, born in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, SE England, UK. He studied at University College London, where he became reader in plant ecology (1924–9) and professor of botany (1929–45). He was director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (1943–56), and wrote The Reproductive Capacity of Plants (1942), Weeds and Aliens (1966), and The Living Garden (1935). |
