| Australian statesman and jurist, the first prime minister of the Australian Commonwealth (1901–3), born in Sydney, New South Wales, SE Australia. He was leader of the Federation movement from 1896, headed the committee that drafted the Commonwealth constitution bill, and led the delegation that presented it to the British parliament in 1900. |
