| Engineer, born in Glasgow, W Scotland, UK. He studied at Anderson's College, Glasgow, and in Leeds. Having investigated the properties of petroleum oils, from 1877 he devoted himself to research on the theory and design of gas engines. In 1881 he patented a gas engine working on the two-stroke principle which became known as the Clerk cycle, extensively used for large gas engines and later for small petrol engines. He was knighted in 1917. |
