| Actor-manager, born in Newark, Nottinghamshire, C England, UK. He began his stage career in 1920, formed his own company in 1937, and became known for his Shakespeare performances. During the Battle of Britain (1940) he instituted the first London season of ‘Lunchtime Shakespeare’. He appeared in several films and on television, and his autobiography, First Interval, appeared in 1954. He was knighted in 1957. |
