| Actor, born in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, C England, UK. He made his first appearance in Jersey in 1939, served in the RAF during World War 2, and returned to the stage in 1946. He worked at various repertory theatres, including Birmingham and the Bristol Old Vic, but scored a huge success as the malevolent tramp, Davies, in Harold Pinter's The Caretaker (1960). After the 1960s, his London stage appearances were rare, but he made many TV appearances, including The Barchester Chronicles (1982), and was in constant demand for film work, often as a villain, as in Dr Crippen (1962), Cul-de-Sac (1966), and many others, known for his piercing stare, menacing voice, and bald head. He was knighted in 1994. |
