| Cricketer, born in Cootamundra, New South Wales, SE Australia. The most prolific batsman in the history of the game, he played for Australia from 1928 to 1948 (captain, 1936–48). He made the highest aggregate and largest number of centuries in Tests against England, and jointly with Mark Taylor holds the record for the highest Australian Test score (334 against England at Leeds in 1930). His batting average in Test matches was 99·94 runs per innings; nobody else has attained 70. The first Australian cricketer to be knighted (1949), he was chairman of the Australian Cricket Board (1960–3, 1969–72), and also published a number of books about cricket. |
