| Opera singer, born in Auckland, New Zealand. A bass baritone, he made his debut in Cardiff in 1959 as Zaccaria in Verdi's Nabucco. Based at Bayreuth (1967–81), he established himself as one of the world's leading Wagnerian singers, while also developing a wide repertoire drawn from the works of other composers. He was knighted in 1992. |
