| Actor, born in Plymouth, Devon, SW England, UK. He first appeared in 1942 with a touring company taking comedy to the armed forces. After the war he joined the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre Company at Stratford-upon-Avon (1946) and the Old Vic Company (1948). Under contract to Rank (1952–60), he appeared in 23 films, including The Cruel Sea (1952) and Doctor in the House (1954). Known for his comedy work, he also gave acclaimed performances in the classics, notably with the Royal Shakespeare Company as Richard Plantagnet in Henry VI (The Wars of the Roses, 1963), Lear (1977), and Othello (1979). Television series include Two's Company, Our Man From St Mark's, Never the Twain, and Nancherrow . He was knighted in 1997. |
