| Actor, born in London, UK. He studied at Cambridge, made his professional debut in One Way Pendulum at Birmingham Repertory Theatre (1961), and joined the National Theatre's inaugural company playing Laertes in Hamlet (1963). He was with the Prospect Theatre (1972–8), made his New York debut in The Suicide (1980), and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1982. He has made several film and television appearances, of which the most popular was the title role in the television drama serial I, Claudius (1977). He gave a highly acclaimed performance in Hugh Whitmore's Breaking the Code (1986–7), and appeared in films such as Dead Again (1991), Hamlet (1996), Gladiator (2000), and Revengers Tragedy (2002), but his main work continues to be in the theatre, playing classical roles such as the ‘turbulent priest’ in Anouilh's Becket (1993). In 1995–7 he was associate director of the Chichester Festival Theatre. He was knighted in 1994. |
