| biography:
| Architect, born in London, UK. He studied at at the Architectural Association School, served with the Royal Engineers in World War 2, and was professor at Leeds University (1962–3). He was renowned for the Royal College of Music (1958–64) in London, the University of East Anglia, Norwich (1962–8), the National Theatre, London (1965–76), the European Investment Bank, Luxembourg (1975), and the Institute of Education (1970–8) in London. He was awarded the Royal Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1977. His publications include A Language and a Theme (1976) and Architecture in an Age of Scepticism (1984). He was knighted in 1976 and made a Companion of Honour in 1995. |
