| Painter, born in Cults, Fife, E Scotland, UK. He studied at Edinburgh and London, where he settled after the success of his ‘Pitlessie Fair’ (1804, Edinburgh) and ‘The Village Politicians’ (1806, London). His fame mainly rests on his genre painting, but he also painted portraits, and in his later years sought to emulate the richness of colouring of the old masters, choosing more elevated subjects. He was made painter-in-ordinary to the king in 1830, and was knighted in 1835. |
