| Playwright and director, born in St Leonard's-on-Sea, East Sussex, SE England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, founded the Portable Theatre (1968), and went on to be resident playwright at the Royal Court (1969–71) and elsewhere. His politically engaged plays include Slag (1970), Teeth ’n Smiles (1975), Plenty (1978), and Pravda (1985), this last written in collaboration with Howard Brenton. He has also written several plays for television, including Licking Hitler (1978) and Dreams of Leaving (1980), and the films Wetherby (1985) and Strapless (1989). The Secret Rapture (1988) won two awards for best play of the year. Later works include Racing Demon (1990), Amy's View (1997), and The Judas Kiss (1998). He was knighted in 1998. |
