| Zoologist and classical scholar, born in Edinburgh, EC Scotland, UK. He studied there, and at Cambridge, and was professor of biology at Dundee (1884–1917) and St Andrews (from 1917). His major work is the influential On Growth and Form (1917), and he also wrote on birds, fish, and oceanography. He was knighted in 1937. |
