| British jurist, born in Colombo, W Sri Lanka. He studied at Oxford, where he became professor of international law (1947–72). He was a member of the European Commission on Human Rights (1954–61, president, 1955–61) and judge of the European Court of Human Rights (1966–74, president 1971–4). As judge of the International Court of Justice (1973–81, president 1979–81), he acted as consultant on many issues of international law. |
