| biography:
| Athlete and statesman, born in London, UK. He studied at Oxford, and was one of Britain's finest middle-distance runners in the 1950s. A member of the Olympic team (1952, 1956), he helped Roger Bannister break the four-minute mile in 1954, and achieved a new world record time in the 5000 m. He won the gold medal for the 3 mile event at the Empire Games in 1954. In 1959 he entered parliament as a Conservative MP, and was minister of posts and telecommunications (1970–2) and minister for industrial development (1972–4) before taking up a career in the City. From 1991–6 he was chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority. He was knighted in 1995. |
