| biography:
| Mountaineer and photo-journalist, born in London, UK. He trained at Sandhurst Military Academy. His first mountaineering ascents include Annapurna II (1960), Nuptse (1961), and the first British ascents of the North Wall of the Eiger (1962) and Mt Vinson in Antarctica (1983). He led or co-led many successful expeditions, including Annapurna South Face (1970) and Everest (1972, 1975 SW face), and reached the summit of Everest himself in 1985. He was knighted in 1996. |
