| biography:
| Aeronautical engineer and industrialist, born in Hendon, NW Greater London, UK. He studied at Finsbury Technical College, became chief engineer to aircraft manufacturers Short Brothers in 1913, and formed Fairey Aviation Company in 1915, starting by building Short designs. Over 100 different types were produced during his 40 years as head of the firm, and by 1925 half the aircraft in the RAF were of Fairey origin. After World War 2, the company worked on guided weapons and helicopters, and the Fairey ‘Delta’ was the first aircraft to fly at over 1000 mph (1132 mph) in 1956. |
