| Electronic engineer and inventor, born in Frome, Somerset, SW England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, and joined the staff of King's College, London. During World War 2 he was a member of the Radar Research and Development Establishment, and in 1945 he returned to Cambridge, becoming professor of electrical engineering (1960). From 1948 his research was concentrated on the development of the scanning electron microscope, capable of producing three-dimensional images at magnifications of 100 000 or more. |
