| biography:
| British naval commander, born near Falkirk, C Scotland, UK. He went to sea at 13, received his first command in 1808, and served in the Napoleonic Wars and against the US in 1812. As commander of the Portuguese navy, he destroyed Don Miguel's fleet (1833). With the British he was second-in-command in Syria (1840–4), and took part in the capture of Beirut and Acre. As commander of the Baltic Fleet at the beginning of the Crimean War (1854), he refused to attack Kronstadt and was recalled in disgrace. He later sat in parliament, and worked to reform the naval administration. |
