| Broadcaster and administrator, born in Bolton, Lancashire, NW England, UK. He trained at Sandhurst Military Academy, emigrated to Australia in 1922, and in 1930 became an announcer with the then Australian Broadcasting Company. He rose to be general manager of the ABC (1935–65), during which time he pioneered broadcasting to schools and rural areas, introduced an independent news service and national television, and established ABC symphony orchestras in each state. He joined the Australian Imperial Forces in 1940, and escaped after the fall of Singapore in 1942 to serve in New Guinea. On his retirement from the ABC in 1965, he became secretary-general of the Asian Broadcasting Union until 1976. |
