| biography:
| British soldier, the conqueror of Sind (now part of Pakistan), born in London, UK. He served in Ireland during the rebellion, in Portugal (1810), against the USA (1813), and in the storming of Cambrai (1815). In 1841 he was ordered to India to command in the war with Sind, and at the Battle of Meeanee (1843) broke the power of the amirs. He is said to have informed the authorities of his victory by sending the punning telegram Peccavi (Latin for ‘I have sinned’). |
