| Pianist and conductor, born in Hagen, W Germany. He studied at Darmstadt and Paris, where his reputation was established by his concerts of classical music. Driven to England by the Revolution of 1848, he settled in Manchester, where in 1858 he founded his famous orchestra. He was knighted in 1888. |
