| biography:
| Writer and naturalist, born in Douglas, New Brunswick, E Canada. He studied at Fredericton University, and became a professor at King's College, Nova Scotia (1885–95), and settled in New York as an editor, joining the Canadian army at the outbreak of World War 1. An outstanding lyric poet, his books include Orion and Other Poems (1880) and In Divers Tones (1887). He excelled in nature studies, such as The Feet of the Furtive (1912) and Eyes of the Wilderness (1933), and he also wrote a history of Canada, Canada in Flanders (1918). |
