| Anatomist and surgeon, famous for his neurological discoveries, born in Edinburgh, EC Scotland, UK. He lectured in anatomy and surgery in London, was appointed surgeon to the Middlesex Hospital in 1812, and became professor of surgery at Edinburgh from 1836. He distinguished between the sensory and motor nerves in the brain, studied gunshot wounds, and worked on the functions of the spinal nerves. The type of facial paralysis known as Bell's palsy is named after him. |
